Bogota – my last day in South America

I left Cartagena on Sun, 3:30 pm; arrived in Bogota on Mon, 1 pm, met up with Verena in our hostel, went on a city tour in Spanish from 2-4 pm, stopped by the hostel where Tracey and Ari are staying (we were on the same Galapagos cruise), went out for dinner with them (Crepes & Waffles), and ended up having a few beers at their hostel. It was so nice to see them again :)

Today is our LAST DAY IN SOUTH AMERICA! Verena left early and I slept in ;-)   Then a wonderful surprise awaited me: Kati and Daniel showed up! We have traveled with them before, but thought we won’t see them again on this trip, but now they are here :)    Will have dinner with them tonight – our last evening in South America…

Arequipa & Colca Canyon & some thoughts on friends & traveling

On Monday, back in Cusco, Verena and I had an lovely day: post office (sending home  the latest picture dvds), the most delicious breakfast at Granja Heidi, a German restaurant in Cusco, sightseeing, HOT STONE MASSAGE (and waxing - that was funny!) – awesome, back to the hostel, ran into Kati and Daniel, also on their way to Arequipa, but on a different bus, and then took at taxi to Cruz del Sur. As we arrived there at 8 pm (the bus was supposed to leave at 8:30 pm) we were told they had just cancelled the bus as the company was too concerned about the protests that were announced for the next two days around Cusco. Of course no one spoke English, but Verena and I are getting better in Spanish every day. Our grammar is  still rather bad, but we   often surprise ourselves how well we can make ourselves unterstood - not always, though ;-)   So we had to get to the main bus station. The guy from the bus company just  hailed a  cab from the street - a cab with no sign, no sticker. To take such a cab is not a good idea as there is the chance to get robbed by such ¨fake¨ taxis. So I told him to call an official taxi, but he didn`t understand why. So I told him that  tourists have been robbed and even killed by taking such unofficial taxis. Eventually, we got an official taxi, drove to the main terminal, ran inside as it was already 8:25 and check-in was already at 8 pm for buses leaving at 8:30pm. We managed to get a ticket with another bus company, and  just got on the bus literally a minute before it left. 9 1/2 hours later…

on Tuesday morning around 6 am we arrived in AREQUIPA :)   We met Kati and Daniel at the hostel, checked out a few more hostels, went for breakfast, met a couple from Vorarlberg (he was wearing a ¨Kletterhalle DORNBIRN¨ t-shirt), strolled around the city center, checked into our hostel, went for lunch, then went our separate ways. Verena and I  went on a 4-hour city tour which was nice and informative :)   In the evening Verena was about to buy a deck of cards when there was a blackout in the city – or at least the part of the city we were in. So we did some shopping using candles ;-)

On Wednesday Kati, Daniel, Verena and I took the bus at 6 am from Arequipa to CABANACONDE, where we arrived around noon. That`s where the Colca Canyon is located and we went our separate ways from there: Kati and Daniel trekked down (and back up the next day), and Verena and I rented mountain bikes  to check out various viewpoints in the afternoon :)

In the evening we were just about to leave our hostel as Stephen (Claire`s boyfriend) walked in – we had met them in Rurrenabaque on the pampas trip) and next ELI  walks in. This was such a nice surprise. We were hoping to meet up in Peru, possibly Arequipa, but we did not expect to see each other in the small village of Cabanaconde. Claire came a little later, and we all had dinner together: Verena, Eli, Claire, Stephen, Armin (from Austria), and a guy from Spain. It was soo nice and it felt as if being with old friends :)

On Thursday we took the 7 o`clock bus to the CRUZ DEL CONDOR, a viewpoint at the COLCA CANYON where you can see condors in the morning between 8 and 9:30. While Eli, Claire and Stephen stayed on the bus back to Arequipa, Armin, Verena and I got off to watch the condors. And we weren`t disappointed: we saw LOTS of CONDORS  :)   :)   :)   Then we  got our mountain bikes on the next bus and rode back to Cabanaconde. The bike ride was beautiful!!! Then Colca Canyon looks like a mixture of Tuscan landscape and Swiss/Austrian Alps :)   And we had the road pretty much to ourselves – no traffic. At one point there was a  rather aggressive dog that Eli had warned us about – and we biked FAST ;-)   Back in Cabanconde we returned the bikes, took a shower (a real HOT shower -  yes!), had lunch, and at 2 pm took the bus back to Arequipa where we arrived aroudn 8 pm. Back at the hostel Kati and Daniel were already waiting, Eli stopped by, too and the 5 of us had a nice reunion dinner at an Italian restaurant. We played a few rounds of ¨shithead¨, a card game that Eli had taught us on the Uyuni trip. Good thing Verena had bought some cards, as Eli`s were stolen about a week ago (his backpack, actually). We had a fun evening – the last one probably with these guys. Eli, Kati and Daniel will climb Chachani mountain tomorrow, then travel through Peru – same direction but at slower pace. Verena and I have to travel faster as we have to make it to Colombia. So we-ll be taking the overnight bus  from Arequipa to Lima tomorrow night and then head to Ecuador.  I`ll miss Eli, Kati and Daniel!

Today, Friday, Verena and I are taking it easy, which means, not getting up in the wee hours of the morning to do some hike or catch a bus. We`re spending some time in the internet cafe near the Plaza de Armas, where we met Stephen and Claire, who`re heading to a campsite tomorrow…

Having  to say good-bye to Eli, Kati and Daniel made me a little sad and also reminded me of my friends back in New York and Austria. It`s been 7 months now that I have been traveling and I feel the same way I felt back in January (about 3 months into my trip) when all of a sudden I missed my friends. It`s funny how it comes in waves and also how it hits you all of a sudden! I don`t know why. Maybe at a point when you`ve seen a lot,  are tired, I don`t really know… So far it`s been really exciting to travel in South America, but since we arrived in Arequipa I feel I`ve seen so much already, and I just enjoyed the company of nice people whom I had met before. – Sometimes people ask me if I think I`ll be ready to return to a ¨normal¨ life again at the end of this year, and I believe I will be ready. I`m incredibly thankful for  having had the opportunity to travel this year,  to see all the places I have seen, to meet all the people I have met, to have had all the experiences (the good and the bad) I`ve had! But I also don`t want to ¨live¨ like this forever. I`m looking forward to getting an apartment in Vienna, working (teaching)again, spending time with my friends… :)

PS:  Taking the overnight bus to Lima tonight.

Arriving in PERU

Verena and I arrived in PERU today :)

On Saturday we had dinner (delicious!) with Daniel and Kati at ¨La Cupula¨, including a chocolate fondue as dessert :)   It was such a nice surprise that they caught up with us instead of staying in La Paz and trekking up the mountain there; well, partly it´s because Kati still hasn´t gotten rid of her cold.

On Sunday Verena and I did a trip to Isla del Sol, and it is indeed the ¨Island of the Sun¨ – we ended up being a little sunburnt by the end of the day, mainly because it was rather cold and we didn´t realize how strong the sun was until we were back at the hostal in the evening. Met up with Kati and Daniel again.

Today we took a bus from Copacabana, Bolivia, to Puno, Peru. It was an easy 3-hour bus ride including border formalities – the usual: filling out some paperwork (entry card) on the bus, then getting an exit stamp from Bolivia, walking across the border, getting an entry stamp from Peru, getting on the bus again and continuing the journey.

So Verena and I made it to Peru and are in Puno now. Puno is also on Lake Titicaca, but not as nice as Copacabana and much bigger. Tomorrow we´re visting the ¨Islas Flotantes de los Uros¨ (floating islands) – looking forward to it. I still remember when Sabine R. told me about them and showed me pictures – about 10 years ago when we were living in Vienna.

Overall I´m very happy traveling in South America – it´s rougher than other parts of the world, but great scenery and fun :)   The only issue Verena and I are having is that it is rather cold; ever since we left Santiago de Chile we´ve often been cold. I ended up bying a hat and gloves and we dress in layers pretty much all the time. So what really surprises me is that even though it´s cold here (and it´s not even winter yet!), people here seem to have NO heating?!

Coca museum in La Paz, Lake Titicaca & Copacabana (3841 m = 12,602 ft.)

After our flight from Rurrenabaque on Thursday afternoon Verena and I arrived back in La Paz, checked into the Adventure Brew Hostel, went to the COCA MUSEUM (small, but very interesting and informative), and then met Kati and Daniel (from the Uyuni trip) for dinner. It´s always so nice to meet up with travelers one has met earlier – especially if they are as nice as Kati, Daniel, Eli and James :)

On Friday we took a bus from La Paz to COPACABANA (3841 m = 12,602 ft.) at the Bolivian side of Lake Titicaca. I LOVE it here! It is absolutely beautiful! In the afternoon we walked up the Cerro Calvario (3966 m) – a great viewpoint. We had to stop often on the way up – to catch our breath. The air is thin here ;-)

The hostel we are staying at,  ¨La Cupula¨ (Eli´s recommendation), is also great – really nice rooms and a beautiful view of the town :)

Today, Saturday, we´re spending a day reading our guide books and researching in the internet… planning day ;-)

Salar de Uyuni (3653 m) & La Paz (3660 m)

What an amazing trip and a great group: Verena, Kati (from Bavaria but living in London), Daniel (from Berlin, but living in London), Eli (from London, but moving to Sydney), and James (from London and also living there).

First day: Laguna Blanca – Laguna Verde – Decierto Rocas del Salvador Dali (Dali Rock Desert) – Chalviry Lagoon & Polque Hot Springs – Geyser sol de Mañana (4860 m – highest point of the trip) – Laguna Colorada

We spent the night at the Laguna Colorada at 4270 m at a hostel with no running water and it was cold there – but we had a lot of fun; WE = Kati, Daniel, Eli, James, and Verena, of course :)

Second day: Arbol de Piedra (stone tree) – Lagunas Altiplanicas: Lagoon Honda, Lagoon Chearcota, Lagoon Hedionda (lunch), and Lagoon Cañapa – Ollague volcano – Salar de Chiguana (train tracks)

The second night we spent at Villa Martin – again pretty basic, but this time there was running water. The hot shower would have cost 5 bolivianos, but it was too cold and the owners too pushy trying to sell hot showers so we chose not to shower. We´re getting used to it ;-)

Third day: leaving at 5 a.m. got us to the Isla de los Pescadores (Fisherman Island) in time to view the SUNRISE at the Salar de Uyuni – the UYUNI SALT FLAT – simply amazing!!! And like everyone who goes there we took lots of funny pictures :) Later that day we also saw a salt museum, salt mines, and a railway & train cemetary.

Upon our arrival in Uyuni at 1 pm, Verena and I realized that there´s really nothing to do there and instead of staying a night to figure out where to go next we decided to take the overnight (11 hour) bus straight to La Paz. The best bus company had no buses that evening, so we (Eli, James, Verena and I) chose another one (not a good choice as we found out shortly before our departure in the evening). We then met up with Kati and Daniel and some people from the other group for dinner – they are all going to Potosi tomorrow. Verena and I will skip it as we still have a long way to Colombia. Shortly before we were to baord the bus, we found out that the company had lied to us and the bus was not a direct service, but we had to change buses and wait for another bus in the middle of the night. Fortunately the tickets were so cheap ($10 for a 11 hour bus ride) that we ended up buying 4 tickets from a much better company who got us directly to La Paz – where we arrived this morning at 7 a.m. after the bumpiest, rockiest, shakiest bus ride ever – welcome to roads in Bolivia!

Eli, James, Verena and I checked into the ¨Adventure Brew Hostel¨not far from the main bus station, where we´ll spend probably two nights. Our dorm is an 8-bed dorm with 2 bathrooms and only guys – other than Verena and myself. This is becoming a fairly common experience here. It seems there are more men traveling in South America than women. In Southeast Asia it was the other way round – more women than men; and more travelers in general than in South America.

So here we are in La Paz (3660 m above sea level) – feeling clean and fresh again after a hot shower and deciding where to go and what to do next :)   La Paz looks really impressive so far and I can´t wait to walk around the city tomorrow – May 1st (Labor Day). We´ll make sure we´ll leave all our valueables in the hostel – as La Paz doesn´t have the safest reputation -  so we should be fine :)

PS: We went for a walk in the late afternoon and ended up having dinner at the RESTAURANT VIENNA, where the owner is from Styria, not far from Verena´s hometown :)   The food was delicious and the service excellent!

Valparaiso & pics uploaded

Today Verena, Daniel (friend of Verena´s from Austria) and I went on a day trip to Viña del Mar (“garden city”) and Valparaiso (Cultural World Heritage Site) – including a visit to “La Sebastiana”, the former house of Pablo Neruda, a Chilean poet who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971. I absolutely loved his house!!!

Quinta Vergara – Moai (from Easter Island) – Borde costero (Viña – Reñaca) – Av. San Martin – Reloj de Flores – Valparaiso antiguo – Plaza Sotomayor – Museo La Sebastiana

Yesterday Verena and I spent a day in an internet cafe at the corner of Plaza Brasil – and I finished uploading the pictures I took when traveling in New Zealand back in February - my favorites are Lake Tekapo, Fox glacier and from the heli-hike in Franz Joseph :)   Check it out:

In the evening we met up with Daniel for dinner :)
